SING UP
Essex Sing Up Network Provider
In November 2011 Janette became the area network provider for Essex, Southend and Thurrock.
She is working with the Music Services in each of these local authorities to devise an integrated Continuing Professional Development Plan to develop singing leadership skills within the school and music service communities.
In addition to undertaking the the Awards Advocate role for Essex schools Janette has maintained an active involvement in creating and leading Sing Up project work in Essex since Sing Up autumn 2007.
2007-8
Leading from the Front (November 2007-March 2008)
Janette designed a series of five CPD days supported by school-based workshops and mentoring to help teachers to become more confident about leading singing in their schools. It involved teachers and over 2000 children in Essex schools.
This scheme was supported by the abcd (the Association of British Choral Directors) with Sing Up 'Hearts and Minds' strand funding.
Sing Up East Singing Leader CPD (March 2008)
Janette led a singing leader training workshop with teachers and vocal animateurs in Norfolk for Sing Up East.
2008-9
In addition to the major Chelmsford Cathedral Chorister Outreach Project Janette devised and led workshops and singing leader training under the Sing Up umbrella in Essex. These included working with staff and children at Northlands Infant School in Pitsea and Young Singing Leader training at Sandon secondary school in Chelmsford.
Chelmsford Cathedral Chorister Outreach Project (Yr1)
Janette was one of two vocal animateurs delivering the Chelmsford Cathedral Outreach Programme working with teachers from 15 schools in the Chelmsford diocese.
The scheme involved training the choristers, offering five singing leadership CPD sessions during the year to teachers involved in the project, preparing children in five schools each term to sing in a joint schools' concert at Chelmsford Cathedral, and offering two follow-up workshops to each school to help them to further develop singing in their schools .
Vocal Health CPD Day March 24th
Keynote speakers for the day were Peter Hunt and Anne-Marie Speed.
Using Sing Up East funding Janette organised a Singing Conference focusing on Vocal Health and Vocal Development. This event was free for teachers from primary and secondary schools and peripatetic vocal teachers from the Music Service.
Cambridge University Sing Up CPD July 2nd
Janette led CPD training at the Cambridge UniversityFaculty of Education for secondary school music teachers on Sing Up and the implications for secondary school music.
2009-10
Chelmsford Cathedral Chorister Outreach Project (Yr2)
In its second year the scheme offered the same training to 15 new schools in the Chelmsford diocese. Namley, five singing leadership CPD sessions during the year to teachers involved in the project, three workshops in five schools each term preparing children to sing in a joint schools' concert at Chelmsford Cathedral, and two follow-up workshops to each school to help them to further develop singing in their schools.
At the end of the summer term some schools were able to participate in an additional event, an evening performance of Swallow Tale at Chelmsford Cathedral.
2010-11
Singing Communities Project (Canvey Island)
This project was been set up to establish a singing community on Canvey Island, involving children from all of the schools and includes the creation of a free adult community choir based at Northwick Park Primary School.
The project started with CPD training for teachers and other adults who would be involved in delivering and supporting the project. The day was co-led by Janette and Jane Haughton, from the Education Department of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. Janette and a team of animateurs from the ROH led workshops in schools during the autumn term focusing on opera and folksong.
In the spring term schools followed either an opera or a folksong pathway leading them to a final showcase where each school will share the songs that they have devised in their selected genre.
